Article: "Special Report-The Alpha Phi Alpha Vote"

Subject

Black Greek Life, Interfraternity Council

Description

In November of 1991, the Interfraternity Council (IFC) required each fraternity in their council to vote on the colonization of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first historically black Greek organization. Then IFC President Greg Hicks delayed the original vote due to low attendance in a Monday meeting address by student petitioners for Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha representative and EC President Giles Perkins. During this meeting, Perkins opposed the movement of the fraternity’s colonization, explaining that the fraternity would promote segregation. In this series of articles from the Ring-tum Phi, students express mixed feelings, oppositions and ultimately the success of Alpha Phi Alpha in their efforts.
